About the Gateway Clipper

The Gateway Clipper Fleet began in 1958, when Pittsburgh entrepreneur John E. Connelly launched a single-deck, 89-passenger riverboat to showcase the city’s three rivers. His vision quickly grew into a beloved Pittsburgh tradition, bringing locals and visitors unforgettable views and experiences on the water.

Through the 1960s and 1970s, the fleet expanded with vessels like the Good Ship Lollipop and Party Liner, offering family and sightseeing cruises that became part of Pittsburgh’s story. In 1982, the fleet moved to Station Square, anchoring itself at the heart of the city’s revitalized riverfront, and by 1987, the grand Majestic joined as the new flagship for weddings, events, and celebrations.

In 1993, John Connelly’s grandson Terry Wirginis took the helm, continuing the family legacy and leading the Clipper into a new era. Over the decades, the fleet became woven into Pittsburgh life—sailing for fireworks, Light Up Night, and Steelers game days—and grew to include five iconic vessels: The Empress, Princess, Duchess, Countess, and Three Rivers Queen.

Now celebrating over 65 years on the water, the Gateway Clipper remains family-owned and operated, with Terry joined by the next generation, Hannah (Wirginis) Roth and Christian Wirginis. With recent renovations, including a reimagined Princess, the fleet continues to blend vintage riverboat charm with modern style.

Today, the Gateway Clipper Fleet stands as one of the largest inland riverboat fleets in the country, offering unforgettable cruises, private charters, and celebrations—
