The part IV module covers separating methods without using a filter medium, commonly called field separation or in short, separation.  It includes gravity settling, centrifugal separation, and hydrocyclone. These technologies are good options for separating solids and liquids and often complement or compete with filtration technologies. Coagulation and flocculation of particles can improve filtration or field separation and are important technologies for solid/liquid separation.  This course will include a lot of practical information, informative but easily understood due to the extensive industrial and teaching experiences of instructors. This course would be appropriate for all job functions especially those new to filtration or an experienced person who is looking for more understanding of separation without a filter medium.

Course Outline - Part 4 Settlng, Centrifugation, and Flocculation

  • Introduction to Field Separation
  • Particles and Liquid Properties Related to Field Separation
  • Principles of Field Separation
  • Gravity Separation Equipment & Design
  • Centrifugal Separation Equipment & Design
  • Pre-treatment by Flocculation

**Instructors recommend attendees register for all four parts of the course to fully understand all aspects of this 8-hour course.  If there is a schedule conflict for one or more of the courses, the AFS office will send the course hand-out and link to watch the course on-demand.  Participants who need to watch on-demand, and have questions for the instructors, will have the opportunity to communicate with the instructors to answer questions.
