The proceedings of the American Filtration Society's first annual meeting held March 21-24, 1988 in Ocean City, Maryland are available for purchase. Wells Shoemaker, conference chairman, had the following introductory remarks:
Filtration and The Health Of Our Planet
Today's news media don't have much to say about filter media, but they do devote much air time, magazine page, and newspaper column to the increasing concern about our environment and its effect on our health, both individually and as a civilization. Air quality, including acid rain, carbon dioxide, and ozone, are documented as major problems. Water quality, and quantity, are worries, both in our major industrial nations and the third world.
Further, we hear of new technologies aimed at healthier bodies-new gains in artificial organs, blood treatments, pharmaceuticals, coupled with better understanding of AIDS.
What is the role of filtration and separation technology in improving the health of our planet in these areas of technology? Does the world's future physical welfare depend on how well our technologists approach the problems of air, water, and the body?
To answer these questions, we are fortunate to have three speakers who will discuss each of these areas, bringing to us their expertise and concepts as to how these technologies have helped in the past, and can be expected to assist as we draw nearer to the 2000's, the "Age of Separations"!
TECHNICAL SESSIONS:
• Flirtation: Is it the Key to the Future Health of our Planet?
• Solid/Liquid Separation Topics:
•Filtration: The Future
•Industrial Aspects
•Environmental
•Mineral Engineering
