"A Taste of the Chesapeake a Bountiful Harvest and its Challenges"

Gerard J. Lynch, P.E. - President of Sigma Design Company

Mr. Lynch was thinking about the kind of issues that would be of interest to our AFS members and felt that since our conference is being held in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed area and that the environmental issues regarding the protection of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed is a global issue, in the news everyday, that this would make a great keynote topic. His presentation will address many of the related issues and how new product development, filtration and separation testing has been used to assist in this battle:

• The Chesapeake History
1. Oysters and Crab industry
2. Current Aquaculture in the Bay
• Challenges and threats to the bay
1. Lower phytoplankton
2. Increased nitrates
3. Contaminated Ballast Water
4. Industrial Pollution
5. Agricultural Pollution
6. Residential Pollution
• Efforts to improve water quality and reduce/remove these threats
1. Ballast Water Legislation and shipboard water treatment testing protocols
2. Local Universities and their work in this fight
3. Community organizations
• New Products and Systems developed to assist in these efforts
• Quality protocols and sustainability.  

He will show how this is a global issue:

• Maryland, Chesapeake Bay (crabs and oysters)
• Our host location!
• New Jersey, Barnegat Bay (clams and oysters)
• New York, Long Island Sound (clams), Peconic Bay (scallops), Montauk (clams oysters), Great South Bay (clams)
• Louisiana, Gulf Of Mexico (oysters)
• France, Arcachon Bay (oysters)
• Ireland, Kenmare Bay (oysters and mussels)

Mr. Lynch will talk a little about each area and present data and photos of the clams, oysters, and the separation equipment they use.

Mr. Lynch will touch on Invasive Species, Ballast Water Treatment and show how new shipboard systems are used. This will help the audience establish the link between FILTRATION – Ballast Water and Aquaculture.

Mr Lynch will also present from work at Arcachon Bay France on post harvest water quality methods.  

We will review and compare these efforts to the work done in the Chesapeake Bay at The University of Maryland’s Horn Point Lab. http://www.umces.edu/hpl  and the Rutgers University New Jersey http://ocean.njaes.rutgers.edu/marine/ .

While he expects it to be somewhat entertaining the real goal is to demonstrate to the audience that that AFS, IFTS, U of MD, Rutgers, Sigma Design and many others are all “global partners” working hard to address and solve these important world issues.
