1991 AFS Chair - Harry Sandstedt
Harry wanted to talk to a paper company about Reemay for filtration, but was told that he could speak only if he joined The Filtration Society. As he filled out a dues check for $15, little did he realize what was to transpire from that encounter in 1972 until his passing in 1994. He was to serve as President of the Delaware Valley Chapter, Chairman of the American Program Committee, Program Chair for WCCIII, Chair of TFS, and Chair of the recently created AFS
In between these leadership jobs, he supported many activities, events, meetings, and programs as the switch came about from England to America. He was a third of the triad A-S-S that carried the ball in the society change to domestic management. His main objectives were to simplify the society programming, create enthusiasm, recruit new leaders, enlist corporate support, and grow the society. Noted for his stories, usually long and corny, he managed a sense of humor combined with energetic zeal for the welfare of AFS.
In his 'paid' job at du Pont, he was recognized as "Mr. Filtration ." and he was successful in waving the REEMAY flag all over the country. In his spare time (after du Pont and AFS), he was a most enjoyable traveling companion, talented singer, bridge player, gemologist, booster of Princeton, faithful Presbyterian, and devoted husband and father. One of his most appreciated contributions was his essay Science and Religion He is missed.
