2007 Award Honorees

Nine prestigious AFS awards were presented on March 27 during the AFS awards luncheon:

The Young Scientist Award was presented to Dr.-Ing. Martin J. Lehmann. This award was established in 1999 and honors individuals at the beginning of the filtration career. Dr. Lehmann is a Development Engineer at Mann+Hummel GMBH with over 30 international publications. He was nominated by Dr. Tad Jaroszczyk.

2007 Award WinnersTwo Senior Scientist Awards were presented. The receipients were Dr. Barry M. Verdegan and  Dr. Ali Chamkha. This aware was established in 1999 and honors individuals in the middle of their filtration career.

Dr. Verdegan is a Research Fellow with Cummins Filtration. He has over 28 years of experience in the industry. He has published more than 50 technical papers, including two book chapters. He holds 17 U.S. Patents and is the chair of the National Fluid Power Associations Contamination Technology Committee. Barry was also recently elected second Vice Chair of the American Filtration and Separations Society. He was nominated by Dr. Tad Jaroszczyk.

Dr. Chamkha is an Associate Professor at the Manufacturing Engineering Departmant of the Public Authority for Applied Education & Training in Shuweikh, Kuwait. He has been a member of AFS since 1992 and has participated in several AFS conferences. Dr. Chamkha has over 179 journal publications. He was nominated by Dr. George Chase.

The Frank Tiller Award was presented to Dr. K.J. Choi. This award honors a lifetime of scientific and engineering achievement in the filtration industry. Dr. Choi is a prolific inventor with 31 US patents. He has taught 20 courses to undergraduate and graduate engineering students at two universities over the past 20 years. He has been the organizer or chair of eleven conferences and technical session in the AFS, Fiber Society, ASHRAE, AAAR and SPE. He was nominated by Dr. Thomas Kuehn.

The Wells Shoemaker Award honoring a lifetime of outstanding leadership and service to the AFS was presented to Scott Yaeger. Mr. Yaeger was one of the founders of AFS and was the first Chair of the society in 1988. He was the Chair of the society again in 2005. In addition, he has instructed short course and been the chair for technical conferences. Mr. Yaeger was nominated by Dr. Ernie Mayer and by Wells Shoemaker.

The Fellow Member Award honoring superior contributions to the organization and leadership of AFS was presented to Dr. Norman Lifshutz. Dr. Lifshutz is the current treasurer of AFS. He was on the AFS Board of Directors from 1999 to 2005. He was Chair of the Awards Committee (1999-2005), Chair of the New England Chapter (1999-2004) and Technical Co-chair of the 2004 AFS Annual Conference. He was nominated for this award by Mike Costantini.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Shiao-Hung Chiang. Dr. Chiang is one of the nation’s leading experts in fluid/particle processing and separation technologies and their applications to energy and environmental systems. Dr. Chiang has been active with AFS since 1988. He has published over 150 papers, chaired technical conferences and sessions, been a member of the Board of Directors, Educational Committee and Publications Committee. He was nominated by Dr. George Chase.

Dana Corporation received the AFS New Product of the Year Award for their Multiwister Crankcase Ventilation System.

Cummins Filtration, Inc. received the AFS Engineering Merit Award for the Cummins Filtration Crankcase Ventilation System.
